“The ASA is the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media, including marketing on websites. We work to ensure ads are legal, decent, honest and truthful by applying the Advertising Code.”

It now covers ‘all media’.

The phrase ‘well regarded’ is almost used as an honorific whenever the self-regulating system of the British advertising industry is mentioned. The consensus is that the title is well-earned.

There is less agreement on the term self-regulatory as although the ASA has no access to legal remedies it knows someone who does. It can refer matters which in its opinion fall foul of the Committee on Advertising Practice code to the Office of Fair Trading and other agencies with access to the courts.

The slight change in the wording on the ASA website would appear to be significant for those of us in direct email marketing. The ASA has taken over responsibility for the regulation of online marketing communications.
